CHAPTER SEVEN

Leo had been at Jorge’s place for the last few days. He has whisked away from his home with a little preparation and placed under house arrest at his best friend’s house. Leo wasn’t wholly uncomfortable with the arrangement, though. He was playing video games as Tiana walked over with a beer. They could not think of a better way to pass the time since Leo couldn’t go out yet.

“Hey, Leo, are you up for some basketball?” Jorge asked, strolling over.

“Sure. Just the two of us, though?” Leo asked, with his eyebrows raised.

“That wouldn’t be very fair. Tiana has a better chance of beating me,” Jorge teased, and Leo instantly felt like strangling him.

“Who else is playing?” he inquired, feeling challenged.

“Marcel, Jeremy, and some other guys on the squad. They all came over to see how you’re doing.”

Leo was surprised. “And I’m hearing this now because?”

“Quit whining and take your shirt off,” Jorge said.

“Ooh! This, I want to see,” Tiana uttered, acting as if she was drooling over the idea.

“Oh, come off it,” Leo replied, throwing his shirt at her. Tiana took the bait and chased him as he ran towards the courtyard, ignoring the pain in his body.

The firefighters gathered, and they took turns to say something to Leo. None of their words were extraordinarily kind, but he could tell that they came from a place of love and respect. After the formalities were over, the game began. Leo was paired with Marcel and Jeremy while Jorge was in the same team as Tiana and a new guy named Sam.

Jorge passed the ball to Tiana. Despite being a girl, she easily outmaneuvered Jeremy and made a slam dunk.

“Boo!” Leo yelled as the ball came back to his team.

About an hour and three team switches later, Leo began to feel exhausted and headed over to the main house – accompanied by Jorge – while the rest kept playing.

“It’s weird how T keeps up with the guys,” Leo complained.

Jorge laughed. “I hear you, man. That girl needs to be a girl,” he commented.

It was Leo’s turn to laugh. Then, with his most serious expression, he said, “Listen, Jorge, I want to talk to you about something, and I need you not to be an ass about it.”

“Alright, bro, hit me,” Jorge said as he enters the shower.

“There’s this girl,” Leo started slowly.

“Here we go again,” Jorge uttered before chuckling.

“Fuck you, man. I’m not saying anything anymore.”

“Oh, come on, Leo. I was just kidding,” Jorge said reassuringly.

Leo eventually told him about Dr. Riley and how they met.

“So, long story short, she helped me save those kids that day, and she works at the hospital. She was the one who treated my injuries.” Leo explained.

“I’m waiting for the actual story, Leo,” Jorge replied with a yawn. The showers closed on his end.

“I think I like her. I mean, I really like her,” Leo finally confessed.

Ever insightful, his best friend asked, “Why do you think so? What makes her different from the last three girls you slept with?” Leo could hear Jorge’s seriousness.
